Writing an Expository Essay An essay that explains a writer’s ideas by defining, explaining, informing, or elaborating on points to allow the reader to clearly understand the concept. An essay is a piece of writing made up of a number of paragraphs. Each paragraph has a speciﬁ c role in an essay.
